Launch Bright Ideas at Rockville Science Day

Attendees of All Ages Can Plan A Moon Landing and Fly Their Own
Model Rocket at  Rockville Science Day on April 29

ROCKVILLE, Md., April 16, 2007 –At Rockville Science Day, set for April 29 from 12-5 p.m. at the Montgomery College Rockville campus, curious minds will not only see and learn about science, they will discover sound waves with an electric guitar, plan their own mission to the moon and launch their own model rocket.

These are just three of more than 30 hands-on exhibits planned for this year’s Science Day. The Rockville Consortium for Science organizes the event annually and invites local scientists, historians, engineers and technology experts to bring their work to life, with interactive science and technology activities for the thousands of attendees.

Some residents have suggested having a science center in Rockville. “Science Day is an example of the kinds of exhibits that could be found in a science center,” said Bob Ekman, Rockville Consortium for Science President. “There are lots of museums, but a science center is more active. We need a place where people can explore science using their own minds and hands.”

New for this year is The Galaxy Explorers Moon Base, courtesy of the Federation of Galaxy Explorers, which will allow science enthusiasts to enter a giant tent complete with everything they need to plan a mission to the moon. Also new is the electric guitar exhibit from the American Physical Society, which will use the instrument to explore sound waves, electricity and magnetism.

The wide variety of exhibits also will feature exotic birds; reptiles; solar, electric and hybrid cars; and the always popular rocket launching.
