                     ROCKNET MEETING MINUTES

                        September 12, 2002

The meeting was held in the City Manager's Conference room. It was called
to order at 7:45 pm.

In attendance were: Brian Pierce, Stan Klein, Jim Beller, Bob Ekman, Betsy
Robbins, Mike Cannon, Art Casanova, and Susan Phillips.

1. The minutes of August 8 were accepted with minor revisions.

2. Betsy Robbins reported on the Rockville City Internet server.
 * The web search engine is now working.
 * Neighborhood and Community Services pages have been reworked.
 * The F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference pages were added.
 * A section has been added for the Charter Review Commission.

3. Bob Ekman reported on RockNet site developments.
 * RockNet had an average of 303 visitors a day.
 * Web pages for the Victoria Condominium were added to the site. Elise Rabin was
given an account to manage the pages.
 * Woodley Gardens pages were updated and Nina Schneider has accepted the page
   authoring task.

4. Susan Phillips from Twinbrook was welcomed.

5. Jim Beller continues to work the property tax issue. Maryland has charged us
about $35 for our servers but we don't think we should owe anything. The City has
agreed to help with consultation and funds.

6. Bob Ekman reported on the status of the new RockNet server. The hard drive has
been repaired, the operating system reinstalled and material copied from the old
server. Lyris List Manager has been installed but not fully working yet.
Transition will require more work but progress is being made.

7. There was a discussion on broadband wireless and a possible seminar. Areas to
investigate are needs in the home, small buildings (apartments), and the community
(neighborhood).

8. Parts of the RockNet security policy was described and discussed. RockNet only
has FTP accounts into limited directories. Stan Klein suggested we improve the
message that appears when you FTP into the server.

9. The recent election process and machines were discussed. RockNet offered to help
the City deal with the use of electronic voting systems.

The meeting closed at 9:25 pm.

Respectfully submitted:
